Year 2008. The world was hit by a wave of recession. Originating in the United States, this downturn was initially thought to have little impact on Japan, and few people felt alarmed. But as time passed, Japan’s economy worsened, and it fell into a situation that it would not be an exaggeration to call the most affected country in the world; small and medium-sized companies with little resilience collapsed one after another. Her father was one of them. He had been the president of a small real estate company. Although small in scale, it had been making some profit, and she grew up relatively well-off. But that now seemed like a dream. As the economy deteriorated, her father's company fell into the red. He tried desperately to turn the company around, but perhaps the strain took a toll on his health. He became ill. Despite his efforts, the company went bankrupt, leaving a large debt.
