She had the appearance of a blonde gyaru who seemed practiced at having fun. I met her around the summer of my second year at university, when I went to a driving-school training camp in Gunma to get my license. Maybe it’s different now, but back then there was a tendency to think men learned manual and women automatic; I personally didn’t care much about the license, so I chose the automatic course. That day the automatic-only course had three men and four women enrolled. For the first five days or so we hardly had any chances to talk; we just went through the lessons and ordinary days continued. By chance her lessons ended at the same time as mine, and although the dormitories were separated by gender, the round-trip bus was the same, so there was a day when we rode the same bus back to the lodge. After an awkward moment, she started talking to me. I didn’t have a particularly good impression of girls who looked like gyaru, and being suddenly approached made me flustered, but when we talked she turned out to be surprisingly friendly and cheerful; because I had begun with a negative image, I was drawn to the gap and found her very appealing. During that conversation we decided to go to a fireworks festival near the driving school. At first she planned to go with other friends, but her friends said they weren’t feeling well and couldn’t go, so it ended up being the two of us. Looking back, they were probably considerate of us. I was starting to be attracted to her and felt more excited than usual, but she was even more forward than I was—she held my hand and we were almost like a couple. By the end of the fireworks we were completely lovey-dovey and walked back holding hands along a dark, empty road. That night I only saw her back to the dorm, but after that, although I think people noticed, I would find excuses to slip out of the room and meet her night after night; we would hug and kiss in a nearby park, and it didn’t take long before we had sex. In the end our relationship only lasted for the duration of the training camp, but I’d like to lose myself in such a summer adventure again.
